چکیده

At the Collm Observatory of the University of Leipzig LF D1 low-frequency total re ̄ection nighttime wind measurements have been carried out continuously for more than two decades. Using a multiple regression analysis to derive prevailing winds, tides and the quasi-2-day wave from the half-hourly mean values of the horizontal wind components, monthly mean values of mesopause wind parameters are obtained that can be analysed with respect to long-term trends and in ̄uences of solar variability. The response of the prevailing wind to the 11-year solar cycle di€ers throughout the year. While in winter no signi®cant correlation between the zonal prevailing wind and solar activity is found, in spring and summer a negative correlation between the TWC can be seen from the measurements. This is connected with stronger vertical gradients of the zonal prevailing wind during solar maximum than during solar minimum. Since the amplitude of the quasi-2-day wave is dependent on the zonal mean wind vertical gradient, this is connected with a positive correlation between solar activity and quasitwo-day wave activity.

Tidal variability of the geomagnetic polar cap mesopause above Resolute Bay

Variability in the geomagnetic polar cap neutral wind from the interaction between gravity wave momentum and near the mesopause above Resolute Bay, Canada (74.9øN, thermal tides, may be an efficient mechanism at polar latitudes. 94.9øW) has been observed by a Fabry-Perot Interferometer, Another suggestion is the ducting of mid latitude tidal oscillations using a circle-to-line detection techniq...

Analysis and Modeling of Ducted and Evanescent Gravity Waves Observed in the Hawaiian Airglow

Short-period gravity waves of especially-small horizontal scale have been observed in the Maui, Hawaii airglow. Typical small-scale gravity wave events have been investigated, and intrinsic wave propagation characteristics have been calculated from simultaneous meteor radar wind measurements. Here we report specific cases where wave structure is significantly determined by the local wind struct...

Correlations of mesospheric winds with subtle motion of the Arctic polar vortex

This paper investigates the relationship between high latitude upper mesospheric winds and the state of the stratospheric polar vortex in the absence of major sudden stratospheric warmings. A ground based Michelson Interferometer stationed at Resolute Bay (7443 N, 9458 W) in the Canadian High Arctic is used to measure mesopause region neutral winds using the hydroxyl (OH) Meinel-band airglow em...

Trends in MLT region winds and planetary waves , Collm ( 52 ◦ N , 15 ◦ E )

Long-period oscillations in the period range 2– 30 days, interpreted as planetary wave (PW) signatures, have been analysed using daily mesosphere/lower thermosphere wind measurements near 90 km over Collm (52 N, 15 E) in the time interval 1980–2005. Interannual and interdecadal variability of PW are found. Since the 1990s, a tendency for larger zonal amplitudes compared to meridional ones has b...

New Mass Loss Measurements from Astrospheric Lyα Absorption

Measurements of stellar mass loss rates are used to assess how wind strength varies with coronal activity and age for solar-like stars. Mass loss generally increases with activity, but we find evidence that winds suddenly weaken at a certain activity threshold. Very active stars are often observed to have polar starspots, and we speculate that the magnetic field geometry associated with these s...
